Returning to Malaysia for the first time in 10 years, US rock band Daughtry recently played a sold out show at prestigious Kuala Lumpur venue KL Live. With 3,000 eager fans in attendance, the band’s founder, namesake and front-man, Chris Daughtry delivered on all expectations with a set full of hits and stunning sound reinforcement courtesy of TW AUDiO VERA36 line arrays.
Having first come to prominence as a finalist in the fifth season of American Idol, Chris Daughtry quickly went on to establish himself with a self-titled, quadruple platinum debut album. Four more albums followed, including 2018’s Cage to Rattle.
Described as “a great night to remember” by Malaysian paper Star2, Daughtry’s KL Live performance came as part of an Asian tour to support the new album, and boasted crowd favourites including Feels Like Tonight, It’s Not Over and Home. For the grand finale, the band members – including keyboardist Elvio Fernandes, guitarists Josh Steely and Brian Craddock, bassist Josh Paul and drummer Brandon Maclin – were bathed in purple spotlights for a rendition of Prince’s Purple Rain.
The company behind Daughtry’s return to KL was well-known concert promoter IMC Live Group (M) Sdn Bhd, who once again engaged Kuala Lumpur’s own Drum Asia Sdn Bhd to select a suitably hard-hitting audio solution. The pair previously collaborated earlier in the year for a performance by Extreme (see article), when a TW AUDiO VERA36 solution was hailed by Drum Asia Co-Director, Mathew Thomas Philip, as having “really rocked” and “made our company look great”. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a similar system was deployed for Daughtry.
A total of 18 VERA36 line array enclosures were flown in a left-right configuration of nine elements per side for front of house sound. Thumping low-end was courtesy of eight BSX modules and eight S33 subwoofers positioned in four stacks of two. A further four VERA36 enclosures were used for front-fill while side-fills comprised of a single T24N per side and two B30 bass cabinets per side. The system was driven by seven PLM 20000Q and five PLM 10000Q Lab.gruppen amplifiers.
